Fasching - Fastnachsumzug

This is the week of Fasching in Germany. Unfortunately we weren't able to go to one of the larger festivals like they have in other locations, we did go to the smaller Fasching parade in our local village Ramstein-Miesenbach. It was great fun!

The parade consisted of lots of different groups, floats, and bands on the parade route. Most of the groups were throwing candy. Some since this is Germany were actually handing out beer, wine, and even harder samples to the crowd. Funny to watch the people when we turned down a free sample.

In the parade we saw a group of Elvis', three 'priests' dragging a wagon full of their supplies (beer), a group from the local food market pushing shopping carts and handing out food, a truck advertising a Haunted Tent complete with all the scary characters (including a chain-saw killer...), lots of cute kids in costumes, and wacky adults.

But of course Mom was right in the front with the kids vying for the candy. She actually got quite a haul.

Next year we will have to go to one of the larger parades.

Life in Germany

Life in Germany is absolutely great!

Nothing like getting up in the morning hearing about an antiques flea market going on in France, hop in the car and in less than an hour we are eating genuine eclairs. Then drive to Luxembourg where we heard there was a sale on Salmon fillets – only 7.95Euro/kg or slightly less than $5/lb. Then still make it home in the same day, before dark, and on the same tank of gas. Didn’t buy any antiques on this trip. Picture is of the Auchan Mall (at least that is what we call it) in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg - really great, fresh Salmon fillets on sale here.

Maybe next trip we'll swing thru Belgium for chocolates and Holland for some cheese.

We arrived in Germany mid-2007 and have been doing a little exploring around. Not as much as we would have liked to do, but that leaves us with lots more to do. So far we have covered a little bit of Germany, made a few short trips through Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, France, Belgium, Holland, and Luxembourg.

We'll try to capture some of our more memorable trips and to catch up on some of the places we have already been.

OK so my first picture posted is not in Germany, but you get the idea.
